Marine and coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, play an outsized role in climate mitigation and adaptation and provide a range of ecosystem services that underpin the resilience of coastal communities and economies.
RISCO works on the principle that healthier mangroves lead to more financially resilient coastal communities, and financially resilient communities lead to healthier mangroves.
RISCO increases the financial resilience of vulnerable coastal communities by insuring them against natural catastrophes and by using the profits generated through the sale of these insurance products to train and fund them to start or scale up 'mangrove-positive businesses'. This results in a self-sustaining virtuous cycle that protects coastal communities, increases mangrove cover, and financially empowers vulnerable communities.
